Can we talk about a $200 multimeter I trashed fixing a TV last month

I tried to cut corners on a cheap capacitor swap in a Samsung from 2018 and killed the main board plus my meter with a reverse polarity slip. Any of you guys ever fry a tool trying to save a few bucks on gear?

Go easy on yourself first off because reverse polarity is a rough way to learn that lesson. A $200 meter should have a proper fuse on the current jack though, so maybe check if it was just a blown fuse inside before you trashed the whole thing. Most good meters have a 10A fuse that will blow before the meter itself gets cooked, and they are like two bucks to replace. I killed a Fluke once the same way and thought it was dead until a buddy showed me the fuse trick, now I always keep spares. Just something to keep in mind for next time so you aren't tossing out a perfectly good tool.

Oh man, that fuse trick saved me too... I did the exact same thing with a cheap meter and just tossed it without even thinking. Now I always check the fuse first before I assume the whole thing is fried.
