A retired tech in Omaha told me my soldering iron was too hot for modern boards

He saw me working on a phone and said, 'You're cooking those pads, son.' I dropped my temperature from 750 to 650 degrees and haven't lifted a pad since. What's your go-to temp for small SMD work these days?

That "cooking those pads" line hits home. It's a good example of how a little outside advice can fix something you didn't even know was broken. What other tools have you changed how you use after a simple tip?

Man, that reminds me of when I used to fight with my tape measure. The hook on the end has that little wiggle, right? For the thickness of the hook itself. I measured inside a window frame once and couldn't figure out why I was off. Someone just said, "You know you're supposed to hook it on the outside and add the thickness, or push it in and subtract, right?" Felt like a total lightbulb moment. Changed how I use the dumb thing for everything now.

My dad showed me the little notch on a pair of lineman's pliers for cutting bolts. I'd just been chewing through them for years. It's wild how much basic technique we're all just missing.
