Overheard a journeyman say "code is just the minimum" and it clicked for me

I was on a resi job last week and this old timer was showing a helper how to land a neutral bar, then just casually dropped that line. I guess I always thought if it passed inspection it was fine, but now I see how much better a job can be if you go a little past the bare minimum. Anyone else have a moment where a simple comment from someone changed how you approach your work?

What's funny is I used to think the same way, "if it passes it's fine" but hearing that line made me realize there's a lot of ground between code and trying to be perfect. @kais67 probably has a point that it applies to other stuff too, but in this trade it's nice to just aim a little higher without going crazy.

Doesn't that apply to almost everything in life though?

@kais67 is right that it applies to everything, but if you chase perfection on every job you'll never finish on time or make any money. Code is the minimum for a reason - it keeps things safe without turning every house into a museum piece.
