My journeyman in Denver said to always torque main lugs to spec, but I saw a guy just crank them down.

He told me 'a click is cheap, a fire is not' after a service call where a loose connection melted a 200 amp panel. I started using my torque wrench on every service upgrade, and sure enough, caught a few that felt tight but were way under. Has anyone else had a boss drill a simple rule into them that actually paid off big later?

Oh man, I totally used to be that guy just cranking them. Then I saw a melted bus bar from a loose lug and it was like, okay fine, I get it now. That click really is cheap.

My old foreman had a similar rule about pipe bends that saved a huge rework job.

a click is cheap, a fire is not" that's a good one. my old boss always said "tight is tight, too tight is broke" and i laughed until i snapped a bolt on a transformer termination. felt stupid standing there with half a bolt in my hand.
