I used to think you could just tape over a junction box if it was tight.

Saw a fire in a 1970s duplex last month that started exactly that way. How many of you actually use the proper blank cover plates every single time?

Proper blank cover plates" is overkill for a quick fix. Tape is fine if you do it right.

Tape is the official "I'll fix it later" solution that lasts for years. My house is basically held together with duct tape and hope at this point.

My uncle's garage burned down from a taped junction box. I bought a ten pack of blank plates for like five bucks at the hardware store. Now I just screw one on and it's done right.
