Tried a 10-inch taping knife for the first time on a big living room ceiling today
I figured it'd make the flat joints go faster but the mud kept drying out before I could feather it out, so now I'm wondering if I need to thin my compound differently for a bigger blade or just stick with my 6-inch.

Man that 10-inch is a whole different beast for sure. Thinning the mud just a little more than usual helped me a ton when I switched up, otherwise it crusts over before you can even get the second pass in. Stick with it though, once you get the timing down it does save a bunch of time on ceilings.
