Showerthought: a ceiling job in a Denver condo building changed how I check for pipes

I was cutting a hole for a new light in a kitchen, and my blade hit a water line I didn't know was there because it was run outside the normal stud bay. The whole unit below got soaked, and the fix cost over two grand. What's the weirdest place you've found a pipe or wire that the plans didn't show?

Yikes. That's rough. Actually, the fix for a cut line is usually way less than two grand if you catch it fast. A few hundred for a plumber to solder in a coupling, maybe some drywall repair. Two grand sounds like they had to open up a bunch of walls to find it, or there was a ton of water damage. Still a huge pain though.

Adds up fast if they're chasing leaks behind drywall.

Yikes is right". Honestly that "took opening up a bunch of walls to find it" part is what gets me. @linda_ward knows exactly how fast that drywall work and repainting adds up to where you're suddenly out two grand before you even know what hit you. Ngl I'd be sick if I had to drop that much just because someone accidentally put a nail through a pipe.
