My mud started cracking on a job in Phoenix after just two days

I was finishing a garage ceiling last week, and the temp hit 105. I used my usual all-purpose compound and did a tight second coat. By the next morning, I saw hairline cracks all along the butt joints. The heat dried the surface way too fast before the deeper mud could set right. I had to scrape it all off and switch to a setting-type compound for the heat. Anyone else run into this with fast dry times?

Phoenix in the summer is basically a giant hair dryer for drywall mud. That all-purpose stuff never stood a chance against 105 degrees. Been there, spent a whole day scraping off a cracked ceiling that looked like a spiderweb. Setting compound is the only way to go when it's that hot, it's a lifesaver.

Come on, setting compound is such a pain though. You have to mix it perfect and then rush like crazy before it goes off. I've had way better luck just thinning down all-purpose mud with a bit more water and working in the early morning. That spiderweb cracking? That happens if you put it on too thick, hot or not. Sometimes the old way just needs a little tweak.
