Update: The harbor master told me to switch to a variable speed cutterhead 6 months ago and I finally tried it last week.

Figured it was just another sales pitch, but after running it through 4 hours of packed sand and clay on the St. Johns River, the difference in load control is honestly night and day, has anyone else been burned by sticking with fixed speed for too long?

Geez, you and me both man. I put off switching for almost a year because I thought it was just another upsell. The way it grabs the load and smooths out the cut is a huge shock compared to fighting with a fixed speed.

Nah man, I tried it on a couple jobs and went back to fixed speed. Maybe my saws are older but the variable speed felt laggy to me like it was hunting for the right rpm instead of just biting in. I got way better results keeping it pinned and feeding steady. Different strokes I guess.
