The day a duck family tried to hitch a ride on my cutterhead

We were doing a small channel job near Lakeville last week, and a mother duck with eight ducklings decided our dredge was the perfect floating island. They swam right up and started paddling around the spinning cutterhead like it was a water ride! We had to shut down for almost an hour to gently shoo them away with a boat. Has anyone else had wildlife decide your equipment is part of the local habitat?

It's funny you mention that because it fits a pattern I notice more and more. People expect machines to just run through anything without a second thought, like nature is supposed to get out of the way. But those ducks didn't care about your schedule, and that's the whole point. We get so used to everything being on our terms that a tiny delay feels like a huge deal. Really makes you wonder how we'd manage if the natural world actually pushed back more often. A little patience goes a long way, even if it costs an hour of work.

Seriously, an hour? They're ducks, not a hazmat team. Couldn't you just idle it and let them get bored?

Ever try to idle a car for an hour just to see if ducks leave?
