Still not sold on GPS guided dredging after trying it for a month
My foreman swears by the new GPS system on the barge, says it cuts our passes in half. But last Tuesday it put me 8 feet off the mark on a bend in the river and I had to redo the whole cut. Is it really worth the hassle or did we just get a lemon unit?

Wait, aren't most GPS units accurate to a few feet regardless of tree cover?

Read an article in a trade mag that said GPS guidance systems need a clear view of the sky to stay accurate. Your barge going around a bend in the river could be blocking the signal with the bank or the trees overhead. That might explain why you drifted 8 feet. Also heard some guys complain that the cheaper systems don't update fast enough for tight river work. Could be you got a unit that just isn't built for the kind of bends you're dealing with.
