Old timer told me to stop wasting money on hydraulic oil filters
Guy was working a dredge near Baton Rouge back in 2019. Had a 20 year old rig. Told me he never changed his filter more than once a season. Said the book specs are just to sell parts. I argued with him for 10 minutes. Then I tried his way for a year on my 6 inch dredge. Zero issues. Made me wonder how many of the maintenance schedules are real. Anyone else tried stretching intervals like that?

Man, that's wild. I mean, I get where the old timer is coming from. My buddy runs a landscaping crew and he swears by skipping oil changes on his mowers for like two seasons. Says the air filter is the real deal, and the oil just gets dark, not bad. I don't know if I'd push it that far on a dredge, but it makes you think. Maybe some of those intervals are just padding for liability. I remember my grandpa had an old tractor he never changed the hydraulic fluid in, just topped it off every few years. Ran for decades before it finally gave out. Makes you wonder how much money gets wasted on perfectly good filters.
