Honestly, I keep seeing guys run the suction line too close to the bank and it's just asking for trouble.

What about the type of stuff you're washing down? A foot of pipe won't save you if you're dumping grease or coffee grounds. That video probably showed a real bad combo of things, not just the pipe length.
