Spent 6 hours on a concrete foundation layout before I realized my measuring tape was stretched

Blame the tape all you want but six hours is enough time to catch a measurement error multiple times, especially on something as critical as a foundation. @xenawhite says check against a known standard before diving in, and that's exactly the kind of basic habit that saves you from blaming the tool for your own oversight. Honestly a stretched tape is a pain but it's also a lesson in why you double check before committing to a layout.

Yeah that's a classic mistake (stretched tapes are sneaky little liars). Best fix is to check against a new tape or a known standard length like a 4x8 sheet of plywood before you get too deep. Dollar store tapes are especially bad for this so always test them first.

Nah man, dollar store tapes are a total gamble. Had one that was off by a solid quarter inch over six feet. Ruined a whole shelf project before I figured it out. Always test em against a known straight edge or a piece of plywood. Cheap is fine but check your tools first.
