PSA: I tried a new drafting pencil after sticking with the same one for a decade

I've always used a basic 0.5mm mechanical pencil for my shop drawings. Last week, a coworker lent me his 0.3mm lead holder for a detail-heavy project. The difference in line clarity for small dimensions was huge, especially on a complex HVAC layout I was doing. I got through the revisions in about half the time because I wasn't fighting smudged numbers. I'm honestly a bit mad I didn't switch sooner. Has anyone else made a simple tool switch that gave you a big jump in speed or quality?

Wait, you didn't have issues with the 0.3mm lead snapping constantly? I tried one years ago and it was a nightmare on anything but super smooth paper, especially on the shop floor. The thin lead felt way too fragile for my workflow. I guess it works if you're always at a clean desk, but for me the 0.5mm is just more reliable. Sometimes the basic tool is the right one because it can take the abuse.

Honestly, I felt the same way for years, @nancy351. What changed for me was switching to a softer lead grade, like 2B, in the 0.3mm size. It seems to have a little more give and doesn't snap as easily on rougher surfaces, even though it still needs a lighter touch than a 0.5.

Wait, softer lead in a 0.3 really works? I always thought it would be too fragile too, but maybe @nancy351 and I should give it another shot.
