Overheard a senior drafter say 'CAD standards are a waste of time' and I nearly lost it
I was sitting in the break room at my firm in Denver last Tuesday and this guy with 25 years experience goes off about how layer naming conventions are just busywork. He said 'just make it look right and move on.' I get that speed matters, but I spent 3 months on a project last year where the previous drafter used random layers for everything. It took me an extra 40 hours just to sort out his mess. Has anyone else dealt with a coworker who ignores basic drafting standards?

you're getting mad at a guy for saying one thing in the break room? i've worked with drafters who use just three layers their whole career and their stuff comes out clean as a whistle. yeah sorting someone else's mess sucks, but that's a project management issue not a layer naming issue. maybe he's got a point and some standards just exist to make the office feel organized.

three layers their whole career"? hold on, i gotta pick my jaw up off the floor. i mean, i've seen some wild layer setups in my time, but that's like a carpenter showing up with just a hammer and a screwdriver. sure, you can build a birdhouse with that, but try framing a whole house. i guess if your projects are all the same small scope it might work, but the second you hand that file off to someone else, good luck.
