Overheard a contractor say 'the drawing is just a suggestion' and it stuck with me

I was picking up a permit at the city office and heard a guy talking to the inspector. He said his crew had to change a steel beam placement on site because the drawing 'was just a suggestion'. The inspector shut him down hard, said the stamped plans are the law. Made me think about how we draft. Our drawings aren't just ideas, they're the rule book for the whole build. If a detail is off by an inch, it can cause a real mess later. How do you make sure your intent is crystal clear so no one gets the wrong idea?

Reminds me of a site where they swapped out a specified window type for a cheaper one. The architect caught it during a walkthrough and made them tear out the whole wall to fix it. That's why you need clear notes on the drawings saying no substitutions.

Used to think those notes were just extra paperwork. Seeing a whole wall get torn out over a window swap really changed my mind.
