I was labeling a set of old MEP details from a 2012 project and realized my system was a mess.

For years I just used the drawing number and a vague title like 'Detail 5'. Now I add the spec section and a quick descriptor, like '23 05 00 - Pipe Support at Wall'. It makes pulling up old details for reuse way faster. What's your method for keeping a detail library organized?

How do you even start fixing a system that old? I mean, I get that feeling of opening something up and just seeing a total mess. My own files were a disaster until I forced myself to pick one simple rule and stick to it.

I get the push for the spec section system, but honestly, that feels like overkill for my own library. I tried it for a while and found myself spending more time on the code than the actual detail. My method is just a simple folder by building type, then a plain English name like "roof drain typical." I can find it in two clicks without needing a cross reference.

My old system was just the drawing number and whatever I was eating for lunch that day scrawled in the margin. Now I force myself to use the spec section, a two word location, and the object. It's boring but it works.
