Hot take: my new $400 drafting lamp is a total waste of money

I got this fancy LED lamp with a 'true color' setting for my drafting table about three weeks ago. The thing flickered out completely yesterday while I was finishing a set of shop drawings for a client in Denver. I had to finish under my old desk lamp, which honestly gave better light anyway. What's a good, simple lamp that won't die on you mid-job?

My old architect friend in Denver swears by a basic swing-arm lamp from a hardware store. It's outlasted three of his fancy ones.

Three of his fancy ones? That's crazy.

Yeah, my buddy had the same thing happen. He bought a super expensive designer lamp for his drafting table and the joint cracked in a year. He replaced it with a cheap one from the home center, and that thing is still going strong five years later. Just a simple black metal one.
