Bought a cheap laser level off a deal site, wasted 3 hours on layout

I picked up a budget laser level from a flash sale site for $35, and it looked fine on paper. The listing said it was self-leveling and accurate to a quarter inch, which sounded perfect for laying out ceiling grids. But when I actually used it on a job last week, the projected line drifted almost half an inch over 12 feet. I trusted it at first, marked up a whole room, then had to redo everything with my old manual bubble level. That small mistake cost me about three extra hours and made me look bad in front of the client. I couldn't return it because the sale was final, so that $35 is gone. Do you all have a rule about never buying measuring tools from discount sites, or do you just check them against a known reference every time?
