Used a cheap cutting mat as a bench liner, what a difference

Got tired of my workbench top getting scratched up from all the small projects I do in my garage in Tucson. I picked up a $12 self-healing cutting mat at a craft store and laid it flat on the bench surface. Now I can mark, cut, and drill on it without worrying about gouges in the wood, and it's easy to wipe clean. The mat took a couple of hits from a utility knife but it's holding up fine, no cuts showing. Has anyone else tried using a different liner like vinyl or rubber for their bench top?

That old mat idea seemed kinda gimmicky to me at first. Figured a cheap piece of plastic wouldn't last a week in my garage, especially with Tucson heat. But after seeing this, I grabbed one for my own bench and it's honestly been a game changer. The knife cuts just close right back up, which I didn't expect at all. My bench top underneath is still smooth as the day I built it. It's way better than the rubber mat I tried before, that thing just collected dust and got sticky. Might have to grab a bigger one for my main work area now.
