The day I realized drilling pilot holes was optional changed my life lol

I spent 3 years splitting every pine board on my workbench until I watched a dude on YouTube just send screws straight into 2x4s without predrilling. Has anyone else been wasting time on pilot holes for softwood?

Three years man, seriously? I've got a buddy who swears by pilot holes even for pine and I've been trying to convince him he's just burning drill bits for no reason. What kind of screws are you using though? Because I tried this with some cheap drywall screws from the hardware store and they just snapped off halfway in. Had to dig the broken pieces out with a pair of pliers and it was a whole mess.
