Plywood thickness stamps lie more than my uncle at poker

Went to build a new bench top last month and grabbed what the tag said was 3/4 inch plywood. Measured it at the store. 23/32. That's not a typo, they've been doing that for decades now. My dad's old workbench from 1985 still has true 3/4 inch boards on it. Got bitten on a shelf span once, sagged after 2 months with just hand tools on it. Now I make myself check every sheet with calipers before I haul it home. Why do they even bother labeling it that way when it's never actually that size? Anyone else account for this when building their frames?
