My buddy's garage sale workbench top saved me $200 in lumber
Saw a beat up 3/4 inch plywood sheet with a layer of hardboard glued on at a yard sale in Phoenix for $15, hauled it home, and now my drill press stops wobbling like it did on the old 2x4 frame, anyone else snag furniture parts for benchtops instead of buying new?
Hold up, that hardboard layer is probably doing more work than the plywood itself. Hardboard is dense and flat, so it gives you a smooth, stable surface that spreads the load out way better than bare plywood would. The 3/4 inch sheet adds stiffness, sure, but a lot of that wobble fix comes from the hardboard being glued down tight across the whole top. If that bond ever lets go, you'll feel it right away, so keep an eye on the edges for lifting. Great score for $15 either way.
