Mistake buying a fancy workbench vise without checking if it clamps right

I picked up a 6 inch quick release vise from an online tool shop 3 months ago for about $90. The jaw design sits too high off the bench surface, so smaller pieces wobble when I try to clamp them. Now I'm looking at shimming it up with some scrap plywood. Anyone had luck fixing a vise that mounts weird on a standard workbench?

My 4 inch Craftsman had the same issue until I bolted it to a 2x4 block first.

My 4 inch Ridgid was the same way till I clamped it to a piece of plywood. Works like a charm now, no more wobble.
