Got told my workbench top was too slick for clamping and now I'm debating whether to sand it down or glue on some grip tape

A guy at the hardware store saw my laminate surface and said I'd never get a good hold on odd-shaped pieces but I've been clamping just fine for 2 years so who's right here has anyone else had to change their bench surface after someone called them out?

Maybe put some non-slip shelf liner under your clamp pads instead of messing with the bench itself. That way you keep the slick top for glue drips and still get grip on weird shaped stuff.

Huh, never had stuff slide around bad enough to worry about it.
