Found a free wood source at a local dumpster behind a cabinet shop

I was grabbing lunch near a cabinet shop in Evanston last week and saw them tossing oak cutoffs into a dumpster. Asked the owner if I could take some and now I have enough for a new workbench top for zero dollars. Anyone else ever score free wood from local shops?

Oh, that's a great find! I actually read a blog post last month about a guy who built an entire shed using scrap wood from a cabinet shop. Said he saved hundreds of dollars on lumber.

Oh man, a whole shed is genius, now I'm wondering how much free wood it would take to build a tiny cabin lmao.

That cabinet shop scrap must've had some pretty rough cuts to work with though. Did his blog mention how much time he spent sanding and cutting everything to fit?

Are you guys actually building sheds from random scrap? I grabbed some oak cutoffs once and spent a whole weekend just cutting out the cracks and finding sections that weren't warped. Ended up with maybe 40% usable wood after all the splits and nails. A workbench top is one thing, but a whole shed sounds like a recipe for a collapse.
