Tried a magnetic phone mount after years of using clamp-style holders. Night and day difference on bumpy roads.

I drive a 2005 Civic with a suspension that feels every pebble. Had a clamp mount that would drop my phone every time I hit a pothole on Route 9. Switched to a Scosche magnetic one for like $15. Now my phone stays put even on dirt roads. No fiddling with arms or losing grip. The only downside is you need a metal plate stuck to your phone or case. Has anyone else found magnets better for rough driving?

That Scosche mount is solid for the price. My buddy Tim has one in his lifted Tacoma and he swears by it even when he's bouncing down logging roads. The magnet is strong enough that he accidentally stuck his keys to the dash once and had to peel them off. Probably the only thing I'd warn about is putting the metal plate directly on the phone case instead of the phone itself, I've heard stories of the adhesive messing up the back glass if you ever take it off.

You ever see a phone fly out of a mount and hit someone in the face? My buddy Mark had that happen with a cheap clamp mount in his old Jeep on a washboard road. @james_ramirez is right about the metal plate thing, but Mark went full dumb and stuck it directly to the phone case, a thin silicone one. The case tore when he tried to pull the plate off after a few months, left this sticky residue all over the back of his phone. He had to use goo gone and a lot of elbow grease to get it clean. He still swears by the magnets though, just says get a better case or put the plate under a hard case.
