The $12 USB tester that caught a cable frying my phone slowly

Read a post on r/electronics about cheap charging cables drawing way more current than they should, so I grabbed a no-name USB meter off Amazon, tested every cable I own, and found the one I keep by my couch was pulling 1.8A when it should've been 0.5A, has anyone else caught a bad cable before it killed a port?
