Replacing a laptop screen on a bus changed my mind about iFixit kits

I was in Portland last Tuesday waiting for the 4 line and saw a guy swap a cracked screen on his ThinkPad right there at the stop, using just a guitar pick and a heat gun. He told me the $60 kit I ordered was overkill and that most repairs just need patience and the right YouTube video, which honestly blew my mind after I spent $120 on tools. Has anyone else done a repair with minimal gear, or am I the only one who went full pro kit on a basic job?

That guy at the 4 line stop is onto something and I would take it even further. Half the tools in those kits are things you use once and then they sit in a drawer forever, like the suction cup and the plastic spudgers, when a guitar pick and an old credit card do the same job for free. The heat gun part is the real trick though, because most people crack their screen trying to force it cold when a little warmth softens the glue and it pops right off. My advice is to buy the one tool you actually need for your specific laptop, like a $10 driver if the screws are weird, and put the other $110 toward a spare screen in case you mess up. Patience really is the whole game here, the tools just keep you from scratching stuff while you wait.
