My brother-in-law said 'just take it to the shop' when I tried to fix my own laptop screen.

Maybe he just doesn't want you to break it worse. Some people are fine paying for peace of mind. Not every DIY project is a life lesson.

Make sure the bracket is fully seated against the backplate before you crank down the screw - thats where most people mess up and strip it. @vera_lewis might be right about calling a plumber for a leaky faucet being overkill, but a stripped bracket screw is a whole different beast once it's stuck in there. A $100 fix now beats a $400 repair later if you force it the wrong way. Ever had to drill out a stripped screw on a wall mount?

Ask him if he also calls a plumber for a leaky faucet. That kind of attitude kills the chance to learn anything. It's a weird flex to be proud of not fixing stuff.
