I was cleaning my laptop fan wrong for years

I always used compressed air straight into the vents, but my old ThinkPad kept overheating. A video from a repair shop in Austin showed you need to open the case and hold the fan blades still while blowing, or you can spin the motor too fast and wreck it. Anyone have a better method for cleaning without taking the whole thing apart?

Yikes, I just use a cheap makeup brush for the vents.

Oh man, I actually just watched a video about that. This tech YouTuber was saying how compressed air can actually push dust deeper into the fan motor if you're not careful. I never thought about that until I saw it. A makeup brush sounds way gentler honestly. I've been using those little sticky gel pads for my keyboard and that works okay too. Maybe it's just me but I feel like the brush gets into the tight spots better.
