Dropped my laptop while fixing the fan, now I swear by magnetic screw trays

Last month I was swapping out the fan on my old Dell XPS and the screws fell everywhere, lost two under the couch and one rolled into a vent. Picked up a $8 magnetic parts tray from Harbor Freight and it caught every single screw on the second repair job. Does anyone else use a magnetic mat or just rely on careful fingers like I used to?

Yeah, the magnetic tray is a game changer for sure. I used to just try and keep all the screws in a cup or something, but they'd always get knocked over. The magnetic mat from iFixit is a bit pricier but it's nice and flexible so you can bend it to catch screws right where you're working. It's one of those things where you're like "why didn't I do this sooner.

@evab52 does the iFixit mat hold screws firm or do they slide around when you bend it?
