Built 3 PCs before someone finally told me my cable management was terrible

I always thought I was doing fine just shoving cables into the back of the case and closing the panel. Then I posted a pic on a forum last month and some guy said my build looked like a rats nest took NyQuil. I was annoyed at first but then I watched a few videos on zip tie routing and actually tried it. Spent an extra 45 minutes on my latest build tucking everything behind motherboard channels and using those little velcro straps. Honestly the airflow feels better and my CPU temp dropped like 4 degrees under load. Now I cant believe I spent years just cramming wires in there. Anyone else have a basic habit they never questioned until someone called them out?

This whole thing about not knowing what you're doing wrong until someone calls you out is SO true. That line about the dishwasher blocking the spray arm hit me hard because I had the EXACT same thing happen but with my backpack. I carried that thing for like 2 years with the straps way too loose and it would swing around when I walked and hurt my shoulders. Then one day a friend grabbed it off my back and tightened the straps to where it actually sat against my spine and suddenly I realized I had been walking around like a hunchback turtle this whole time. It's wild how we just accept our own broken methods as normal.

That rat's nest taking NyQuil line is gold, I'm stealing that. It's funny how one small critique unlocks a whole new way of doing things. I think cable management is just a small example of a bigger pattern though. You get so used to your own shortcuts and routines that you don't realize they're actually making things harder until someone points it out. Same thing happened with how I load the dishwasher. My roommate finally showed me I was blocking the spray arm with a big pan, and now everything actually gets clean. You just assume your way is the normal way until someone proves you wrong.
