Wish I'd known that monitor arm install trick before stripping two bolts on my old desk

Was installing a cheap gas spring arm on my particle board desk last weekend and the instructions just say "tighten firmly." Stripped the clamp bolt on my first try. Had to drill it out and use a bigger bolt from the hardware bin at Ace. Turns out if you pre-drill a tiny pilot hole through the particle board first, the threads actually bite better and you don't crunch the board. Ka-Ching saved me a second trip. Anybody else learn that the hard way with cheap desks?

Pre drill everything on those cheap desks. I snapped two bolts before I figured that one out myself. A little wax or soap on the threads helps too if you don't have lube handy.

Read somewhere you can dip the bolt in wood glue first for extra grip.

Did you try tightening it with a crescent wrench or just your fingers?
