Two weeks ago I nearly threw out my whole desk build because the paint wouldn't stick, but a $6 can of primer from Ace Hardware saved the whole thing.

I sanded that butcher block for 3 hours straight and the paint still peeled off in sheets before I finally gave in and tried oil-based primer, and now I can't believe I spent 8 years skipping that step on every project - has anyone else had a finish totally fail on them like that?

My buddy Mike spent a whole weekend staining his basement bar top, looked perfect, then he set a cold beer on it and the condensation lifted the finish right off in a perfect circle. He was so mad he just left it there for like two months as a reminder. Eventually he sanded the whole thing down and used a marine grade varnish, which was way overkill but that thing could survive a hurricane now. The whole time he kept saying he should have just used a sealer coat first but he was in too big a rush. I think we've all been there where you skip one little step and it costs you triple the time in the end.

Oh come on, is it really that big of a deal? I mean yeah it stinks when something like that happens but leaving a beer ring on there for two months as a reminder seems a little dramatic. He could have just put a coaster down or sealed it and moved on. I get being frustrated but people act like one mistake means the whole project is ruined forever when it's really just a minor setback. How long did he actually spend sanding and redoing it compared to just adding a sealer coat from the start?
