tried a $20 butcher block countertop from IKEA vs a $60 solid wood desk from a local place in Denver and the cheap one won

so I was all set to build a new desk for my gaming setup and thought the IKEA stuff would be crap but man I was wrong. got the $20 birch butcher block from IKEA and some of those adjustable legs from Amazon, total maybe $35. the $60 one from a local wood shop in Denver was also nice but the IKEA one actually felt smoother and lighter to move around. I sanded it a bit and added some polyurethane and it looks killer. has anyone else had luck with cheap butcher block for a desk or am I just getting lucky?

Huh, I was the same way, thought IKEA stuff was just particle board junk but that butcher block surprised me too, honestly cheap doesn't always mean bad.

Yeah exactly, "cheap doesn't always mean bad" is spot on. I got their solid birch butcher block counter about three years ago for my kitchen island and that thing has held up through spills, knife marks, the whole nine yards. Feels just as solid now as the day I put it together. Nice to know I'm not the only one who had that moment of surprise.
