The scrap wood shelf bracket I drilled wrong for 2 years straight

I kept bolting shelf brackets to the underside of my desk top in a 30 minute install, only to have them crack the glue joints every time I leaned on the edge. Last month I flipped the brackets around so the long arm faces the wall instead of the floor, and now all my monitor weight sits on the flat part instead of pulling against the screws. Has anyone else had luck reversing the bracket direction on a hollow core desk, or did I just get lucky with a thick pine top?
