That time my desk leg split right after I finished staining it

I was in my garage in Austin last Saturday, just put the third coat of stain on a $25 pine desktop I was turning into a raised standing desk, and then the 2x4 leg I built split right down the middle when I set it upright. Took me an hour to brace it with scrap metal and wood glue, but now the whole thing wobbles less than my store-bought desk ever did. Has anyone else had a build fail at the very end and end up with a fix that worked out better than the original plan?

Honestly, that "wobbles less" part is the whole win. Same thing happened to me with a bookshelf leg, I snapped it right before I could even set it down. I just jammed a stack of washers under it and shimmed the base, and now it's the most solid piece of furniture I own. Store bought stuff always has that tiny flex, your bodge job probably fixed a design flaw from the start. Scrap metal and glue might be ugly, but it's way better than any factory joint. Ngl, I'd take a franken-built fix over a clean fail any day.
