That $40 butcher block countertop I was so proud of... starting to crack after 6 months

I found this solid birch butcher block at a surplus place in Austin for 40 bucks back in February. Sanded it down, put 3 coats of poly on it, looked AMAZING for my new gaming desk setup. But now I'm seeing these tiny cracks forming near the edges where I rest my wrists, and I'm starting to think I bought a piece that was already drying out. Did I mess up by not sealing the BOTTOM too? Has anyone else dealt with cheap butcher block splitting like this?
