Scrap wood at the ReStore actually made a decent desktop

I stopped by the Habitat ReStore in Portland last Saturday and they had a pile of old butcher block countertops for $35 each. I grabbed one, cut it down to 60 inches, and slapped it on some $20 sawhorse legs from Facebook Marketplace. It's got some knife marks and stains but after a quick sand and wipe on poly, it looks better than my old laminated desk. Anyone else salvage weird materials from these stores instead of buying new lumber?

Man, tell you what, my buddy Dan did the exact same thing with an old bowling alley lane from a Habitat store in Ohio. He sanded it for two weekends straight and now it's got this cool 60s vibe in his home office, plus it survived his kid dropping a full toolbox on it. He said the only downside is the oil smell took a month to clear out, but he'd do it again in a second.
