My dad's "just buy plywood" advice cost me $14 and 2 flat tires
Last month my dad swore 3/4 inch plywood was fine for a monitor stand without a center brace, so I went with it and my 32 inch screen cracked the whole top right down the middle after a week. He came over, saw the mess, and admitted he forgot I was using a gas spring arm instead of a flat mount, which changes the weight spread completely. Has anyone else trusted a relative's shortcut and had it blow up in their face, or am I the only one who should've known better?

My uncle Allen did the same thing with a porthole window on a houseboat back in 2011. He swore a tube of marine caulk would hold it through one winter, and I was too cheap to argue. By March, a whole seagull had basically moved into my cabin through that gap, and it ate half a bag of pretzels I left on the counter. Took me three weeks to get rid of the bird and the smell. I still don't talk to him about boat stuff, but he did buy me a new window out of guilt, so I guess that's a win.
