I tried using a hollow core door as a desk top

Picked up a used hollow core door for $15 at a restore in Austin, thought it'd make a cheap desk. But it sagged under my monitor and keyboard within a month, even with a center leg. Learned you really gotta reinforce the inside or just spend a bit more on solid wood.

Even with a center leg" is the part that gets me. I've built three desks out of hollow core doors over the years and never had one sag. The trick is you have to put a solid wood frame underneath, like a 2x4 perimeter glued and screwed to the door so the weight sits on the frame not the cardboard inside. A single leg in the middle just pushes the sag into a different spot. I think people skip the reinforcement part because they want it to look clean but that's when it fails.

Notice how this same pattern plays out everywhere people just want the clean look without doing the boring structural work underneath, like when someone skips priming before painting and wonders why it peels. We always want the shortcut but the real fix is doing the ugly prep work first.
