Got roasted for using a dining table as a desk. Here's what I changed.

Honestly, my buddy came over and said my monitor wobbled like crazy on that cheap hollow-core table. So I swapped it out for a $60 butcher block countertop from the hardware store near me, and now it's solid as a rock. Has anyone else had to explain why a real desk is worth buying?

I grabbed a countertop from the lumber yard too last year. Same exact situation, my legs would shake the whole table if I stretched. The butcher block trick is legit because it's dense enough to absorb vibration. A lot of people don't realize most dining tables are built light on purpose, they're meant to be moved around not hold a heavy monitor setup. You made the right call, your buddy probably just didn't know how solid that swap would feel until he tried it himself.

I mean, sure, a wobbly monitor is annoying, but "got roasted" for using a dining table? That's some light teasing at best. Your buddy probably just wanted an excuse to talk about your setup. A $60 butcher block countertop is a solid move, but I wouldn't act like a real desk is some deep life choice. People use kitchen islands as desks all the time and nobody's calling the cops. You do you, but calling it a "roast" feels like a stretch.
