Ditched my IKEA countertop for solid butcher block after a chisel test

My buddy kept telling me butcher block was worth the money for years and I always figured he was just being extra. But after seeing a side by side of what happens when you actually use your countertops instead of just looking at them, I get it now. That chisel test is brutal but it really shows the difference.

The "actually use your countertops" part really hit home for me. I went with a cheaper laminate years ago because it looked fine, and after a few holidays and regular cooking, it looked beat up and had these scratches that wouldn't go away. Finally switched to butcher block a couple years back and it just takes whatever you throw at it with no drama.
