Went to a retro game convention and saw the same PS1 mods over and over
I was at Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee last weekend, walking around the modders row, and it got me thinking. Every other table was showing off the same PS1 Xstation installs and Dreamcast ODE replacements. Don't get me wrong, those are cool mods, but where is the creativity? I saw maybe two people trying something different, like a handheld Wii in a custom 3D printed shell. The rest was just copy paste from YouTube tutorials. Is anybody else tired of seeing the same five mods at every show, or is that just how this hobby is now?

Oh wow, so groundbreaking, a PS1 that plays discs, who would have thought!

Just buy an old CRT from Goodwill for ten bucks if you care about lag, otherwise a modern LCD with a RetroTink is your best bet. Keep the PS1 stock if you're not comfortable with soldering, the laser mech on those is fragile enough as it is. Plenty of people skip the mods entirely and just use emulation on a Pi, way less headache unless you're chasing that original hardware feeling.

I was at MGC too and saw the same stuff. Your point about copy paste from YouTube tutorials really stuck with me. What do you think is driving that, is it people just wanting a reliable mod they can follow step by step off a video, or something else like the parts being easier to get for those specific builds? I'm curious if you think the shows themselves encourage that by how they set up modder row.
