The heatsink screw trick everyone swears by cost me 4 hours
Everybody online says to use a tiny dab of thermal paste and let the cooler tighten itself. I followed that advice on my PS5 SSD mod. Wasted 4 hours getting error codes because the heatsink wasn't seated right. Had to go back and hand tighten each screw in a crisscross pattern like an engine head. Anybody else ditch the "tighten until it stops" method?

So you were basically following the "tighten until it stops" advice that people swear by for thermal paste, but it sounds like the real issue was the heatsink itself not making full contact. Did you end up checking if the pad or paste was actually spreading evenly across the SSD controller after you crisscrossed them? I've had to redo builds before because the mounting pressure was all wrong just from one side being slightly tighter.
