Swapped thermal paste on my PS5 and the difference was way bigger than I expected

Had my launch PS5 for 3 years and the fan was getting loud. I used some generic thermal paste I had lying around from a PC build a few years back. Temps dropped maybe 2-3 degrees which was pretty meh. Then I borrowed my buddy's Thermal Grizzly stuff and the fan barely kicks on now during God of War. Does the brand of paste really matter that much or did I just mess up the first application?

...so the real question is did you actually torque the screws down in the right pattern and check the spread before you slapped the heatsink back on? Because 2-3 degrees sounds more like a contact issue than a paste brand issue. Even cheap paste should do better than that if the mount pressure is even. I've had paste dry out and separate on me before, and no fancy tube fixes that. Plus, God of War is a pretty consistent load so the fan curve is gonna react to any temp swings pretty fast. Did you happen to pop the lid again and see if the first paste had actually covered the whole die, or was it patchy in a corner?

Yeah the first application probably had a bad seat or bubble in it.
