Saw a guy at the Columbus Micro Center pull a Switch apart on the demo table and nobody stopped him
Stopped in the Micro Center up on Bethel Road in Columbus last Saturday to grab a usb c cable and ended up standing there for like 25 minutes watching this guy mod a Switch right on the demo table. He had the back plate off, thermal paste syringe out, new fan sitting on a paper towel, the whole setup. What got me is that two employees walked right past him and didn't say a word. I asked one of them on the way out and he just shrugged and said they get modders in there all the time and as long as nothing gets stolen they leave it alone. The part that bugs me is he was doing it dry handed, no mat, no wrist strap, screws rolling around loose on the glass counter. I've fried a fan header on a lite before from static in my own kitchen so watching that made my teeth hurt. Curious if anybody else here has a store that lets them work in house or if this was just a weird Columbus thing.
The wild part isn't the modding, it's that the employees have just accepted it as normal store policy. Guy is out here doing open heart surgery on a Switch with the same tools I use to eat soup, and Micro Center is fine with it as long as the merchandise walks out the front door and not the back. Honestly that dry handed thermal paste job is gonna haunt me more than the missing wrist strap.
