PSA: Swapping the thermal paste on my PS5 with a cheaper brand dropped my temps by 8 degrees

I put some generic $5 paste on instead of the expensive stuff I usually use, and after 3 hours of playing Elden Ring the fan barely kicked on high what's the science behind that?

Hold up, 8 degrees cooler with bargain bin paste? That's wild. I've been building PCs for years and always heard the expensive stuff was the way to go. Maybe the stock paste was just really bad from the factory, or the cheap stuff spreads thinner and covers better. Either way, I'm tempted to try this just to see if it works on my own console. Sounds like you got lucky with the application too, because one bad blob of cheap paste can go the other way real fast.

Yeah, I had pretty much the same experience. Did a repaste on my old gaming laptop with some generic tube I grabbed for like 5 bucks, and the temps dropped a solid chunk. Figure the stock stuff was just dried out and the cheap stuff was enough of an upgrade to make a real difference.
